As energy consumption often represents more than 70% of the overall cost of compressor operation throughout its service life, you must exercise care when selecting any compressor control system. Differences between control systems overshadows differences between compressor types. Ideally, a compressor's full capacity is precisely adapted to balanced consumption, a concept frequently applied to process applications. Most types of compressors come with their own control and regulation systems. Adding equipment to coordinate control with other compressors in the installation, such as an Atlas Copco AirOptimizer agreement, will further improve the system's operating economy. When analyzing the various costs for producing compressed air, you will receive a breakdown similar to the example in the diagram (1 = energy consumption, 2 = maintenance, 3 = investment). However, the breakdown of different costs varies according to the number of yearly operating hours, the equipment included in the calculation, the types of machines, the selected cooling system, and other factors.
